Homunculus Rex
Artist | Narrative Designer | Graphic Novelist
For more than three decades, Homunculus Rex has explored how stories move between body, image and page. Originally trained in performance before expanding into design, film and education, he has built an interdisciplinary career spanning visual art, filmmaking, production design and more than two decades teaching at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. Across every medium, his work has been driven by the same question: how can images tell stories? That lifelong exploration now finds its fullest expression in graphic novels. Following his debut, What's Your Sin? A Sin Confessed Is Half Redressed, his latest book, Heavy Petting: The Adventures of Gully Gonad, is—as the title cheerfully warns—a very graphic novel: sexually explicit, darkly comic and strangely arrousing. Blending the visual language of cinema with the immediacy of drawing, Rex's work invites readers into worlds where humour, provocation and humanity exist side by side.

Homunculus Rex
Artist | Narrative Designer | Graphic Novelist
For more than three decades, Homunculus Rex has explored how stories move between body, image and page. His career has unfolded across performance, design, film, education and graphic novels, each discipline becoming another language through which to investigate the power of visual narrative. Originally trained as a dancer, street theatre performer and visual artist during six years at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar (HBKsaar), Rex discovered early that movement, image and space were simply different ways of telling stories. After completing his Meisterschüler at HBKsaar, he moved to London to undertake an MA in Design and Media Arts at the University of Westminster, further expanding an interdisciplinary practice that has continued to blur the boundaries between art, performance, film and design.
Alongside twenty-two years teaching on the Performance programmes at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, and seven years teaching on the Film Practice programmes at London South Bank University, Rex maintained an extensive creative practice. Twenty-five years ago he founded Sugavision, a specialist botanical props studio whose work has supported numerous film, television and performance productions. He has also worked as a production designer and art director, filmmaker, editor and creator of broadcast idents and trailers, contributing to award-winning films and television productions while continually exploring new forms of visual storytelling. Although his work has taken many forms, its focus has remained remarkably consistent: exploring how stories inhabit different media. Whether through the moving body, a cinematic frame, an object on stage, a carefully composed image or a sequence of drawn panels, his practice is driven by a fascination with the ways images carry memory, emotion and meaning. Graphic novels have become the medium in which these experiences converge most completely.
His debut, What's Your Sin? A Sin Confessed Is Half Redressed, introduced readers to his distinctive blend of visual invention, psychological observation and dark satire. His latest collaboration with Wickerman, Heavy Petting: The Adventures of Gully Gonad, published on the UK's National Pet Remembrance Day, is—as the title cheerfully warns—a very graphic novel: sexually explicit, darkly comic and strangely arousing. Blending the visual language of cinema with the immediacy of drawing and the timing of performance, his books invite readers into worlds where humour and discomfort, tenderness and provocation exist side by side. For Rex, the graphic novel is not a departure from his previous work, but the place where decades spent telling stories through bodies, objects, images and film finally come together on the page.
